Neck pain occurs when muscles, bones, ligaments, or tendons that support your head are strained or injured. It can occur at any age but is common among adults. Neck pain can severely distract your daily activities and lead to severe life-threatening conditions if left untreated. You develop Memorial Area neck pain from a sudden injury, or it gradually develops over time from wear and tear. Home remedies like rest and improving body posture can ease neck pain. Sometimes you may need medications or physical therapy, and the severe cases may involve surgery. Below are the leading causes and prevention measures of neck pain.

Strain and tension of neck muscles

The neck muscles support your head and allow motion. Muscle strain and tension can result from poor posture, poor neck sleeping positions, neck jerks during exercises, and working too long on a desk without a change of position. Minor activities like reading on your bed, gritting your teeth, or hanging on your smartphone for too long can cause neck pain.

    Injury

Your neck can be injured in a car accident, sports, or a fall. These situations can cause your neck muscles and ligaments to dislocate, leading to pain or stiffness in your neck. Neck bones can also be fractured from injuries. Sudden neck movement in the opposite direction causes pain and soreness in your neck.

    Meningitis

Meningitis is a condition where the thin tissue surrounding your brain and spinal cord becomes inflamed. It is a fatal disease and requires immediate medical attention. The common symptoms of meningitis are a stiff neck, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, fever, and light sensitivity.

    Worn joints

Like other body joints, neck joints tend to wear as you age. Osteoarthritis is a medical condition that causes the cartilage between your neck bones to deteriorate. Neck bones deterioration will then form bone subdivisions affecting joint motion causing neck pain. Spinal stenosis, where your spinal column narrows, exacting pressure on nerve roots causes neck pain.

    Heart attack

A heart attack can cause neck pain. Accompanied heart attack symptoms are sweating, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, and arm or jaw pain. If you encounter neck pain with these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

    Prevention measures

The following changes to your daily activities can prevent neck pain.

    • Good sleeping posture: The head, neck, and body should align while sleeping. A pillow under the neck can help prevent pain. Sleeping on your back with the thighs slightly elevated by a pad will help flatten spinal muscles.
    • Take frequent breaks: Always take breaks between long-distance travel and when you work long hours on your phone or computer. Moving around to stretch the neck and shoulders can prevent neck pain.
    • Use good posture: Ensure your shoulders align with your hips while standing or sitting. Your ears should be directly over your shoulders.
    • Quit smoking: Smoking can increase your chances of developing neck pain
    •  Adjust your computer chair and desk: Your monitor should be on the same level as your eyes. Your knees are supposed to be a little lower than the hips.

If you are unsure of the cause of your neck pain, visit your reliable specialist for diagnosis and treatment. Schedule an appointment with Expert Pain for neck pain treatment.
